The group also nominated Drill Hall in Denne Road, an application which was accepted by Horsham District Council earlier this year.

David Moore, chairman of the Horsham Society, said: “It’s a facility more than anything else like the museum, and it’s a fantastic facility.”

He continued: “It’s something we think should stay within the public domain and not be seen entirely as an asset that can be sold.

“It could be sold off if somebody did want to run it as a private company.”

Under the Localism Act, if a building is listed as an asset of community value, the group will be given time to bid on the asset if it is sold.

He expected a decision on the application to be made within the next month.
