The application for 15 flats was given a unanimous thumbs up by Mid Sussex District Council’s planning committee on Thursday (December 10).

The scheme, in Church Walk, will include no parking, no lifts and no affordable housing, though developer New River will make a financial contribution equivalent to two homes as part of a S106 agreement with the council.

Supporting the application, Robert Eggleston (Lib Dem, Burgess Hill – Meeds) spoke about the changing face of town centres, saying they would only survive and thrive with a mixture of retail, commercial and residential properties.

Predicting many more such applications, he added: “If you bring in residential development into town centres you create economic activity.

“I know that creates conflict with space but it’s part of the new reality that has been thrust on us very quickly by Covid-19.”

The development will be made up of 12 two-bedroom and three one-bedroom flats – three on the first floor, six on the second and six on the third.

The building will be designed to include a landscape deck starting at the first floor, providing an open space just for residents.
