Returning officer Diane Shepherd has taken to the stage to announce only half the ballot papers had been verified - a process that initially started around 11.15am.

However, counting has begun in one corner of the room, with several candidates eagerly gathered around the table as the papers were checked.

The turnout in the district is still unknown but expected to be quite large given the length of time it has taken to verify the papers.

Nationally, only 36 out of 650 seats have been declared at the time of writing, with an exit poll predicting Tories coming close to a majority.

A time estimate for the result in Chichester had been pushed back to 5am but it appears it could now be even later.
