Mid Sussex District Council is supporting tenants who may be at risk of losing their home because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The council is offering advice and help because the pandemic has caused a rise in unemployment and has put financial pressure on many people in privately rented housing.

The government’s ban on evictions ended on May 31 and the furlough scheme is set to finish in September so the council aims to keep people in settled tenancies whenever possible.

West Sussex councils have worked together to create a survey for private landlords and letting agents so they can understand how the pandemic has affected tenants.

“As the various Covid-19 support schemes begin to wind down, the council is anticipating a significant increase in the number of people who need support and advice from our housing team,” said councillor Jonathan Ash-Edwards, leader of Mid Sussex District Council

“We’re taking this action now to ensure we’re in the best possible position to help anyone who’s at risk of becoming homeless,” he added.

Cllr Ash-Edwards encouraged all landlords and letting agents to complete the survey at www.midsussex.gov.uk/about-us/consultations so the council can see where support is needed.

“It only takes a few minutes to fill out but it will make a huge difference,” he said.

There is also support for landlords to help them maximise income and minimise void rent periods, as well as tailored support to maintain tenancies.
