New 50mph speed limit agreed on A259 between Seaford and Newhaven

The location was seen as a priority with one fatal, four serious injury and nine slight crashes in the last three years with East Sussex County Council receiving £125,000 of Public Health grant funding towards several speed management projects.

Several residents wrote in to object to the proposals, arguing that the speed limit should be lowered to 40mph instead.

But officers explained that introducing an even lower limit would need engineering measures to slow down traffic, requiring far more than the £125,000 pot available.

They told councillors that the idea of a new pedestrian crossing, which was mentioned by residents, was also desirable but was outside the scope of the speed limit programme.

The county council’s planning committee voted not to uphold objections to the scheme on Wednesday (April 13).

Richard Stogdon (Con, Crowborough), vice-chairman of the committee, said: “While I’m sympathetic to what has been said by the residents, it’s beyond our scope to be able to embrace this suggestions at this meeting.”

The new speed limit will stretch from just east of the junction with Mill Drove to the existing 30mph limit entering Seaford.

The signs and lines on the A259 between Denton Corner near Newhaven and the existing 30mph speed limit in Seaford will also be reviewed as part of the proposals.
