Cliff Archer, who retired last month, had served an incredible 44 years on the council. This was recognised by the award of Freedom of the Parish, the highest honour a council can bestow.

During this time, he held the position as chairman, served on several committees and even held the post of acting clerk.

His contribution to the community has not been confined to the parish council as he has also been a school governor, member of the Village Hall Management Committee and still serves on the PCC for St Marys Church.

Cliff has been instrumental in making sure the ditches, drains and culverts on Chidham peninsula remain well maintained and drained to avoid flooding.

He has seen a number of changes during this time, not least the role technology now plays.

He said: “Back then there was no internet, so the clerk delivered a set of papers for the next meeting to each councillor’s home. A few councillors tore open the envelope at the start of the meeting! Gentle hints from me over time stopped this.

“Also the minutes were hand written in a big bound book and each set of minutes, after ratification at the next meeting, was signed off by the clerk and chairman.”

Jane Towers, vice chair of the council, added: “Cliff has been a stalwart of the community. His knowledge and attention to detail will be missed by us all.”
