Parliament must resume immediately after ‘unlawful’ prorogation - Brighton and Hove MPs

Prime Minister Boris Johnson prorogued Parliament earlier this month in the run up to a Queen’s Speech in mid October.

However the move has been strongly opposed given the October 31 Brexit deadline and no deal in place for the country to leave the EU.

This morning the Supreme Court has ruled that Mr Johnson’s decision to advise the Queen to prorogue Parliament was ‘unlawful’ because it had the effect of frustrating or preventing the ability of Parliament to carry out its constitutional functions without reasonable justification.

Reacting to the judgement, Caroline Lucas, Green MP for Brighton Pavilion, tweeted: “Supreme Court decision has stopped Johnson in his tracks. Parliament cannot be swept aside by prime ministerial whim. It must resume immediately.

“This is just the start. Our democracy won’t be safe until we have a written constitution, protecting our rights and rule of law.”

Peter Kyle, Labour MP for Hove, added: “The Supreme Court have delivered justice for our democracy and common sense. Now let’s get back to Parliament and sorting out the massive challenges our country faces.”

Speaker John Bercow is set to consult with party leaders, saying the Commons ‘must convene without delay’.
