Peter Kyle’s Brexit amendment for public vote on Brexit deal to go before MPs

Peter Kyle, the Labour MP for Hove, put forward the amendment with fellow Labour Party MP Phil Wilson.

If it is approved, it would mean there must be a public vote on a final Brexit deal.

Writing for the Brighton & Hove Independent last week, Mr Kyle said: “This is very different to the 2016 referendum. That referendum was advisory, this one will be binding.

“Even better, the second the deal is confirmed by the public it will go onto statute without ever needing to return to parliament.

“Conversely, if the country refuses to confirm the deal then the status quo is maintained and government is instructed to revoke Article 50, again without having to return to parliament.

“It means our compromise plan is not a ‘neverendum’ or ‘best of three’. Our plan offers a definitive end to this nightmare, one way or the other.”

Last night, the MP tweeted: “It’s in...the ‘Kyle-Wilson Compromise’ has been submitted for the indicative votes process.

“This House will not allow in this parliament the implementation and ratification of any Withdrawal Agreement and any Framework for the Future Relationship unless and until they have been approved by the people of the United Kingdom in a confirmatory public ballot.

“We also submitted four pages of supporting MPs from across the House, and the Table Office had a queue outside after the last vote with people waiting to sign.

“Thank you so much to every MP who has got us this far, and will remain open to #compromise in the coming days.”
