Political opinion: Voters #PickNick in Chichester South By-election

Late on Thursday 12th June, the result of the Chichester South Ward by-election for Chichester City Council was declared, with experienced community campaigner and local advocate Nick Russell (Liberal Democrat) duly elected as the new councillor for the ward.

Cllr Russell will now join fellow Liberal Democrat councillors Judy Gershater, Sean McHale, and Robert Miall in representing Chichester South on the City Council.

Following his election, Cllr Russell expressed his gratitude to residents and highlighted the positive engagement he experienced throughout the campaign.

“I’m thrilled and grateful to have been elected to represent my ward of Chichester South, and to have met so many lovely people during the election campaign,” he said. “I must thank Jess Brown-Fuller, MP for Chichester, as her passion, energy and commitment to Chichester has really deepened residents’ rapport with the Liberal Democrats as a party for our local community, as I have often heard on the doorsteps.”

Looking ahead, Cllr Russell outlined some of his key priorities for the ward, with a particular focus on young people and community amenities.

“Supporting amenities within the city and improving opportunities for young people are among my top priorities,” he said. “We need to support our younger residents and offer them opportunities and safe spaces for them to foster their growth, develop skills and build self-esteem.”
