Plans to revitalise the Bishopric area of Horsham town centre will be displayed by the council this week - but should they include removing the infamous Shelley Fountain?

The sculpture, called the Rising Universe, has long divided opinion in Horsham and has drawn debate worldwide. To some it is a symbol of Horsham town, but to others an ugly piece of artwork.

Horsham District Council is now looking to change the layout of the pedestrian area to make it more attractive for visitors, alongside Westrock’s redevelopment of Bishops Weald House and the planned Waitrose and John Lewis At Home stores off Albion Way.

The designs will be on show at unit number eight on the north side of the Bishopric from Thursday October 16 to Saturday October 18 from 10am-4pm.

As the consultation gets underway the County Times is asking readers whether, as part of the proposals, the Shelley Fountain should stay in the Bishopric, be pulled down or perhaps move to elesewhere in the town or district.

Please vote in the poll on the right to take part in the survey.

After this week’s exhibition, there will be a display in Swan Walk Shopping Centre outside Wilkinson from October 19 to 28.

A number of ideas have been developed with the help of Land Use Consultants, who have created a blank canvas for the public space together with a range of ‘pick and mix’ proposals.

West Sussex County Council will also be displaying a package of sustainable transport improvements.

The designs will be available from October 16 to view on HDC’s website.
