Horsham’s East Street could take another step to becoming permanently traffic free as it is up for discussion at a county council meeting tonight (Monday September 23).

The experimental Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) was introduced in April 2012 and stopped traffic accessing the road from 10.30am-4.30pm.

West Sussex County Council’s North Horsham County Local Committee will now decide whether or not to agree to allow its officers to make provisions for the TRO to become permanent.

The principal objection to the scheme has been from blue-badge holders who have pointed out that since the blue-badge bays were relocated from East Street to the Carfax outside of Ask, they are inaccessible during the times East Street is closed to traffic.

The other complaint was that traders could not accept deliveries for most of the working day.

An independent public inquiry was held in June 2013 with the inspector recommending the TRO be made permanent subject to the bays being accessible at all times.
