Popular Wiston Granary closed down

The popular Wiston Granary tea room has shut after a little over three years.

Wiston Granary, opened by Dan Chitty and Jess Patel in March 2013, was an attempt to both revive and re-invent the Wiston Tea Rooms

A statement released by Jess and by Richard Goring of Wiston Estate, which owns the site, said Jess and Dan had ‘put their heart and soul’ into the operation, but they do not believe it is a viable business.

“There are several reasons to why this decision has been made,” it said, “and to help customers understand we have listed a few:

“-Concerns over increased financial liability due to the National Living Wage, Workplace Pensions, increased supplier costs and overheads.

“-Changes in their own personal circumstances.

“-Further investment is still required in some areas.

“-The Landlords’ decision not to renew the lease in 2017.

“Wiston Granary and the Wiston Estate are aware that this will be disappointing news to many customers who have enjoyed the tea rooms over the last twenty five years. However, taking all factors into account, we do not see this as a sustainable business going forward.

“The Estate is exploring the option of a non-profit making meeting place for the village and the Surrounding community to join together for tea, coffee and cake; further information will be posted once the Estate have been given the opportunity to put things into place. The Wiston Estate is fully supportive of Jess and Dan’s decision and grateful to them both for their tireless commitment to the community and customers of Wiston Granary.

“Jess and Dan are very grateful for everyone’s loyal support over the last three years and would like to thank customers and their incredible team for their continued support and understanding, as they close the doors at the end of May.”
