While there has been immense sadness in the town, not only among the 2,500-strong Catholic community but among the wider Christian family, feelings within the parish have included relief that the Pope earthly suffering was over and gratitude for his life and example.

Father Royston Pegley explained reaction within the parish at the death of Pope John Paul II: "It's a mixture of feelings.

"His suffering was a great witness that so many people who are 'written-off' when they are not working right and are put aside.

"He has given dignity to all who might be suffering.

"This is important for lots of people here in Bexhill where there are so many elderly people in nursing homes, yet everyone has a purpose in life right to the last moment.

"His example gives people strength and courage."

A joint Deanery mass is expected to be announced soon to pray for Pope John Paul II's successor.

Father Royston said this would probably be in St Leonards.
