Pre-school children get back to nature

BATTLE Pre-School staff were delighted to welcome to their Forest School Open Day last Saturday Keith Datchler OBE, who has recently become a key player in The Prince of Wales Coronation Meadows project.

Keith has been involved in meadow conservation for many years and was delighted to talk to staff and parents about the importance of introducing children to their outdoor environment at an early age.

Pre-school manager Beverley Smith said: “A Forest School ethos has been embraced by the playgroup and Kate Longley a team member has undergone Level 3 Forest School Leadership training with Sussex Wildlife Trust.

“Children at Battle Pre-School Playgroup can enjoy shelter building, whittling, learning about wildlife and nature, fire building and cooking in a controlled and safe environment.

“The children have the opportunity to use real tools and experience sitting around a real camp fire.

“Children over three are taught the proper use of tools and respect danger and use the tools safely.

“This is a dynamic approach to learning where confidence in the outdoors is built, leading to a life-long relationship with natural spaces.

“The staff at Battle Pre-School Playgroup have noticed how the children have become more familiar and relaxed with the woods since starting their weekly visits.

“Some recent comments received from parents included ‘it is a great way for children to learn about nature for real rather than just through books and pictures’ and ‘I hope that pre-school continues to provide this invaluable opportunity for the children’.

“Whilst this is only available to the children who attend Battle Pre-School Playgroup at present, a holiday club and after school clubs are being considered, if you would like further information please contact Battle Pre-School Playgroup on 01424 774057.”
