It was set up in memory of the late Worthing resident Peter Vaughan by his family and will be awarded on an annual basis, up to a maximum of £1,500, with mentoring support from professionals.
The inaugural Peter Vaughan Scholarship has been awarded jointly to Jacob Pennels, studying computer science at Warwick University, and Isaac Daughtrey, studying maritime law at Reading University.

Isaac said: “As a recipient of the scholarship, the Vaughan family have enabled me to continue my community projects outside of my degree discipline.
“I aim to fully utilise the mentor support given to me to gain an even deeper insight into the legal profession. The support I have received will prove useful both now and in the future.”
The scholarship is designed to encourage aspiration and success in progression to a Russell Group University among Worthing College students whose parents have not had a university education.

“They are both a credit to the college, their parents and carers and most importantly themselves.
“I am most grateful to the Vaughan family for their generosity in offering the scholarship and trust that their investment in the students will prove a rewarding and lasting legacy in the ongoing success of the students.”
The successful students were interviewed by the Vaughan family and submitted powerful testimonials explaining what the opportunity to study at university meant to them.

“We hope the scholarship can run for many years, continuing his legacy and supporting youngsters from Worthing College as they progress in their studies and onwards into their careers.
“We’re pleased to award the first inaugural scholarship jointly to Jacob and Isaac, who were the outstanding candidates, and we look forward to supporting them in the future.”
