Promenade is to close for revamp

A SECTION of Bexhill's promenade is due to be closed as the first stage of the Next Wave scheme nears completion.

The final stage of work to the West Parade element of the project includes resurfacing of the promenade. This will make the footpath even, after years of wear and tear.

As a result, the promenade will be closed from Monday, October 18.

The closure will be in place on the section of West Parade from the kiosk (current site office) to the toilets adjacent to Richmond Road. Work is expected to take a minimum of four weeks.

The West Parade toilets can still be accessed during this period, as can the Sovereign Light Café.

Signage will be placed on site advising on access routes.

Tarmac will be laid, which then needs a period of approximately one week to settle – this will explain why on occasions it might appear that no surfacing work is taking place.

Finally, a resin bonded surfacing will be laid. This element is dependent on conditions and cannot be laid during wet weather.

During the same period the seawall will be pressure-washed and repaired and new railings will be installed.

Project sponsor Cllr Christopher Starnes said: “We apologise for any inconvenience this causes to our residents. We have tried to keep the promenade fully open for as long as possible over the last seven months.

“However, we have mentioned before that closures would be inevitable for the resurfacing work to take place. Our contractors will try to finish the job as soon as possible and we thank residents and businesses in advance for their patience. The project is being delivered on time and on budget. By choosing this method of resurfacing we can ensure the seafront is closed for as short a time as possible.”
