£200,000 backing for market bid

MORE than £200,000 has been pledged to set up a Covent Garden-style market at the old Harveys depot in Pinwell Road,Lewes.

Lewes Community Partnership has received a fantastic response to a request in last week's Express for support from the community and local businesses. The group is in the process of setting up a co-operative and share ownership scheme, and three individuals have each pledged to buy around 50,000 worth of shares.

Triodos Bank, an ethical financial investment bank, has also offered an 80 per cent mortgage to fund the 1.6 million bid for the site, and now the partnership is confident it can convince Harveys to take its bid seriously.

Keith Rapley, the founder of the group, said: 'We are thrilled with the initial response, it's been amazing considering we only launched the share ownership scheme last week.We still want to encourage more residents to come forward to invest in a part of their town and to become a direct part of an exciting project.

'And of course, the more people we have the less our monthly mortgage repayments will be.'

The group will deliver its financial plan to Harveys today (Friday).
