Quirky fair welcomesthousands of visitors

The fourth Floral Fringe Fair took place over the weekend of June 4 and 5 in the grounds of Knepp Castle, seven miles south of Horsham, the private country home of Sir Charles and Lady Burrell and not normally open to the public.

The fair is eclectic and quirky and carefully chosen for quality and also with an emphasis on locally produced work made by the person selling it preferably.

A mix of plant stalls, wildlife interest (Knepp is the heart of an extraordinary re-wilding project) artists and maker, food stalls and picnicking, vintage goods and over a hundred classic cars each day.

We were incredibly lucky with the weather as it stayed dry both days and over 5,000 visitors came through the gates.

On Saturday we were entertained by Pentacle Drummers, a tribalesque drumming group from Eastbourne who welcomed us to the John Nash designed castle.

There was a best-dressed in vintage style competition for visitors which was won by Sophie May-Lewis on Saturday.

The prize was a gift from Knepp of one of their safaris in the Autumn to watch the deer-rut and couldn’t have been more appropriate as Sophie is a locally based wildlife blogger!

On Sunday the ever-popular Mythago Morris performed, as well as some Surrey ladies doing ‘Just Jhoom’ Bollywood style dancing and the talented Archie Mckeown from Havant singing classics from Phantom of the Opera and Les Mis.

Kerry Le Bern sang her jazzy vintage songs throughout the weekend in the tea tent.

Dates are set for next year as June 3 and 4 so if you still haven’t made it to the beautiful and well-kept secret that is Knepp Castle, just south of Horsham on the A24, then put it in your diary for next year!
