Rail delays around Chichester after fatality at Portchester station

Trains through Chichester are subject to delays this morning following a fatality at Portchester railway station.

A man was killed after he was hit by a train this morning at Portchester railway station.

The incident took place shortly after 8am at the station in Hill Road.

Emergency services are still at the scene and services affected include South West Trains between London Waterloo, Basingstoke, Southampton Central and Portsmouth Harbour and Southern services between Southampton Central and Brighton, Horsham and London Victoria.

A spokesman for British Transport Police said: “Officers were called to the line at Portchester station at 8.11am following reports that a person had been hit by a train.

“Officers attended along with colleagues from Hampshire police and paramedics from South Central Ambulance Service but a man was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The man’s death is being considered non-suspicious and officers are working to establish his identity and inform his family.

“A file will be prepared for the coroner.”

Major disruption to rail services running through the station will last until at least midday, with delays of up to one hour predicted.

Train services affected include Great Western Railway, South West Trains and Southern.
