Rail link re-instatement hope

CAMPAIGNERS hope a critical meeting this month will signal the way ahead for the re-instatement of the Uckfield to Lewes rail link.

Network Rail presented its final draft report on the scheme to the Central Rail Corridor Board.

The Board includes representatives from Uckfield, Crowborough and Lewes town councils with parish councillors attending for the first time.

Members had the chance to comment on the work that Network Rail have done so far.

Board chairman Cllr Rupert Simmons said it was accepted that further work is essential so a decision can be taken whether there is a business case for reinstatement.

The final study report will be considered on June 20.

Town councillor Ian Smith said: 'We await this with bated breath - believe me there will be plenty of reaction.'

Wealden Link chairman Brian Hart said: 'It's important this is considered not just as a rail line between Lewes and Uckfield but as part of the entire railway system serving the South East.

'Scotland has had money spent on its railway network. Why can't we?

'With oil prices rising people must take a long term view using the same criteria as for highway planning.'

He added: 'There's a black hole in Labour's transport policy but we know the Conservatives have their eyes on it.'

Lewes MP Norman Baker said: 'The meeting was well attended and questions were asked by myself and Charles Hendry.

'I think it is important to take time and try to get it right.

'It's better to get it right than rush into things.'
