Raydar provides support for Littlehampton families

DiSABLED children in Littlehampton will no longer be allowed to slip under the “Raydar”, a new, Littlehampton-based charity has pledged.

The parent-led group Raydar is appealing to families with disabled children to join its quest of raising public awareness about the large variety of disabilities.

The group officially received its charity status earlier this month, and has now held its first parents’ meeting at the Locomotive, in Lyminster Road, Wick.

During the meeting, Raydar committee members promised the health and well-being of disabled children would be their “number one priority”.

Chairman Kellie Ellis said: “Everybody in the charity is a parent and carer for at least one disabled child.

“We provide parents of disabled children that vital support network that they need.

“Sometimes it can be very difficult, particularly when you think you’re alone and isolated in the community.

“When you’ve got a child who’s got a hidden disability, who misbehaves in the shops, you feel you can’t go out at all because everybody is tutting and judging you.

“At least when you come here, you find you’re not alone.”

She added: “Our number one priority is the health and well-being of the children.

“We will provide fun day trips out for them, during term time and during the holidays.”

Raydar is running an after-school club, All Sorts, every Thursday from 4pm to 5.30pm for £1 per family, at the Wickbourne Centre, in Clun Road.

The parents’ meeting is every Friday, from 10am to noon, at the Locomotive.

Raydar’s first fund-raising raffle, at the opening meeting, made more than £300.
