Record calendar sales give good kick-start to Bognor seafront lights cash

Fundraising for the summer lighting displays along Bognor Regis seafront has got off to a good start this year.

Record-breaking sales of a 2009 calendar featuring the town now and then have enabled 600 to be donated to Bognor Regis Seafront Lights.

The total is the most in the four years the calendar has been produced by town-centre business Unique Promotions printing and embroidery.

Unique Promotions' owner Paul Wells said: "Sales have gone exceptionally well this year. We have run out on several occasions."

He thanked shops which stocked the calendar for contributing towards its success and the Observer for publicising it.

Seafront Lights chairman Jason Passingham said the group needed as much help as possible to maintain the illuminations between West Park and Hotham Park at a time of financial cutbacks.

"We are delighted with the success of the calendars, and it gets our 2009 fundraising activities off to a flying start," he said.

"With businesses likely to give less this year, we will have to work harder to make up the shortfall to keep the lights shining.

"We are one of the few groups that still hold jumble sales. Many people look forward to ours as the hall is always piled high. We are expecting a good turnout for our next one on March 14."

Calendars can still be bought from 8 The Arcade in Bognor town centre. Meanwhile, residents and visitors are also able to support the lights through the Adopt a Light Bulb scheme.

For 2 a year, adopters receive a certificate stating which lamppost the bulb is on and its colour. Forms are available from Heygates Paperback Exchange at 67 High Street, Bognor.
