Recycling facility featured on prime time TV

THE science and technology at West Sussex's Ford Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) will be featured on BBC1's Bang Goes the Theory on Monday (May 2).

Bang Goes the Theory presenter Jem Stansfield explores the cutting edge technology used at the Viridor operated MRF, which sorts and separates recyclable materials ready for reprocessing and manufacturing into new goods; reducing energy use and the need for raw materials.

The programme will research how smart technology sorts materials, including paper, metal cans, plastic bottles and glass containers from a mixed collection service into 13 different material types, whilst ensuring the quality of the end products meets stringent market specifications.

Deborah Urquhart, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for the Environment and Economy, said “Ford MRF is the vital hub facility enabling West Sussex County Council and our District and Borough Council partners to achieve high levels of recycling by offering householders easy, convenient and cost-effective recycling services. Effective communications and education are also important and we are pleased that Bang Goes the Theory will show the technology behind the MRF to a primetime audience.”

Jen Hake, Viridor’s Education Officer at Ford MRF, said: “If you’re into recycling, then watch this programme. The BBC production team will present a recycling plant in a way you’ve never seen before.

“Along with our local authority partners we are proud of our operations at Ford MRF and its ability to transform thousands of tonnes of recycling, collected via simple mixed collection systems across the county, into high quality materials that can be used to make new products.”
