Recycling rewards suggested

WORTHING Borough Council is to be asked to consider implementing a scheme where residents earn points for recycling which can be spent in local shops and restaurants.

Cllr Bob Smytherman says that residents in Halton, Cheshire, earn up to £135 worth of points a year from more than 120 reward partners at no cost to residents. Recycling rates there have increased by 60 per cent over six months. He wants Worthing to consider implimenting the scheme.

The October meeting of the council will be asked to consider to investigate introduction of a similar scheme in the borough.

Cllr David Potter said: “Worthing can be rightly proud of what is has achieved on recycling so far, but we feel there are still improvements that could increase the amount. We don’t want to penalty charge our residents for failing to recycle enough - we want to reward them for recycling more.”
