Reduction in licence fee rise for cab drivers

TAXI and private hire drivers have won a reduction on this year's rise in licensing fees.

Rother District Council originally wanted to increase charges for drivers' licences to 123 for a hackney carriage, 98 for a private hire vehicle and 105 for a private hire operator.

But at Thursday's licensing and general purposes meeting, councillors vowed to amend the charges to 110 for a hackney carriage, 90 for a private hire vehicle and 95 for a private hire operator.

This reduces a 23 per cent rise in fees to an increase of 10 per cent.

Councillors felt they needed to do as much as they could for the trade given the current economic climate, which was why the amendment was carried.

Other measures Rother is taking against the recession include:

'¢ Increasing funding to the CAB to 70,000

'¢ Working with Business Link to provide one-to-one business advice sessions at Bexhill CAB, and also at the customer help points at Rye and Battle

'¢ Investment in Sidley Goods Yard to provide space for small and start-up businesses by 2010.
