Residents create garden walk for well-loved neighbour

Mark Williams, along with other residents of Cumberland Crescent, Angmering made the garden in honour of Peggy Scammell, who he said was a well-respected and longstanding member of the community before she died aged 97.

Mr Williams said Peggy enjoyed walking the area with her dog Bess and was always stopping to speak to other residents and to share her knowledge and wisdom.

Mark said: “Unfortunately Peggy lost 90 per cent of her sight about two years before her passing but that in no way stopped her from taking Bess out for a walk and to chat with her friends and neighbours, young and old.

“Her wisdom and knowledge was simply staggering, and she always picked up after her dog.

“Peggy would always walk Bess through the narrow path between Cumberland Crescent and Cumberland Road. She loved this area because it is level and she knew the other people who used it.”

Two benches, two planters and a plaque were installed along the path, with plans to expand further.

The work was achieved by donations from residents and businesses and support from Angmering Parish Council, the county council and community volunteers.
