Residents win takeaway fight

Town centre residents have won their battle to stop a Bognor Regis takeaway from opening longer.

The occupiers of flats along the Queensway were backed by councillors in their fight against the plans by Best Kebab.

Their concerns were supported by Arun District Council's licensing sub-committee. Its members refused Best Kebab operator Mehmet Karakus permission to carry on serving food.

They rejected his application to extend his opening hours from 1am to 3am on Thursdays. They also threw out Mr Karakus' plea to only have one trained door supervisor instead of two in place on Saturdays from midnight until 3am.

His bid for one rather than two supervisors from midnight onwards on Thursdays and Fridays was also refused by the committee.

However, councillors were happy with Sussex Police's willingness to relax the previous strict requirements for two doormen on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Sundays between midnight and 1am. These need only be deployed when the police consider them necessary.
