Swan Walk shopping centre has unveiled plans to redevelop the western end of the centre, creating a new multi-screen cinema, a large new retail unit and four ‘family friendly’ restaurants.

The proposals, currently on display in the centre, show the project will span three floors and will be taking over areas currently home to Wilkinsons, Trend and Hop Skip and Jump.

A new public seating area will be built outside and access to the centre will be at the north western corner, currently used as the entrance to Trend.

On the first floor (mall level) a new large retail unit will be created.

A small space will also be left for the expansion of two of the downstairs restaurants, while the entrance to the cinema will be located in the north western corner, off a new walkway which will join up with other retailers in the centre.

On the second floor, which is currently home to privately rented office space, a new five screen cinema is proposed.

New lifts and escalators will built to access all three floors and customers will also be able to enter the cinema via the centre’s multi-storey car park.

It has not been confirmed who will be taking over any of the new units.

Gill Buchanan, Swan Walk centre manager, said the plans would ‘rejuvenate’ the western end of the centre and stop trade escaping from the town.

She said: “We anticipate, subject to the approval of the planning application, that construction will commence on site in April 2018 and that the new development of restaurants, retail and the cinema will open on October 2019.

“These are exciting times for both Swan Walk and the town centre as a whole and we are delighted to be able to showcase our plans to our loyal and valued tenants and customers during the public consultation.”

The exhibition is being held today (Friday March 18) from 11am until 4pm in unit 29 in Swan Walk, in the empty shop between the The Body Shop and Clintons.

It will also be open on Saturday, March 19, in the same unit from 10am until 3pm.
