Rich contemplative music

BATTLE Choral Society will be in fine voice for the group’s next concert on Saturday December 1.

The programme is one of rich contemplative music by two great French composers.

Gounod is perhaps more famous for his operatic works, but his lyrical Messe Solennelle also known as St Cecilia Mass is simple and moving and reflects his deepening Catholic faith. The second half is devoted to Faure whose Cantique de Jean Racine is set to words of the 17th century French poet Jean Racine. The much-loved Requiem is a smaller work than some other Requiems but within this is the haunting soprano solo ‘Pie Jesu”.

The final movement ‘In Paradisum’ leaves listeners with a quiet sense of peace and joy. Accompanying the choir will be a professional orchestra and soloists Grace Constable (soprano) Gary Marriot (tenor) and Michael White (baritone).
