Paul Goscinski, 36, from Brighton, claimed he woke in a cabin on the Transmanche ferry after it docked in the early hours of Sunday to find all the other passengers had departed and the terminal exits locked for the night.

He left the ship and entered the empty terminal where it is believed he made his way to the disused viewing gallery and jumped 20 ft to the ground, fracturing his ankle.

Despite his injury he drove home and only went to hospital when he awoke later in the day.

Newhaven Transmanche operations manager Steve Forrest said it was a mystery how the man had remained undetected on the boat.

Thirty minutes prior to docking all cabin occupants were woken and all cabins checked afterwards to ensure they were empty.

He added: 'I don't know where he was. He must have been hiding somewhere. It's a mystery.'

He had reported Mr Goscinski to police as he had not re-entered the country through the regular channels.

'Immigration had all left and gone. He had gone up through the passenger terminal and jumped off a roof.

'This is a restricted zone so it was a breach of security and I have reported it to the police,' said Mr Forrest.
