Riding the wave for charity

It's a voyage with a difference - a twenty mile trip to Camber by windsurfer or kayak.

The Bexhill to Camber Challenge will be held between August 28-30 to raise funds for Cancer Research UK.

It's a gruelling ride by either method and not for the fainthearted, but the group of friends are well experienced and looking forward to this dramatic event.

Organiser Marcus Whitney said: "The reason we are doing it is because just windsurfing out and back is fun, but we thought we do it for charity and try and make a difference. "Many of the team have been affect by cancer in there lives which why we have been so motivated to do this.

"The challenge is to cover the 20 Miles by sea (with true distance of approx 30-35 miles in sailing distance) between Bexhill and Camber.

"Most will windsurf or use a kayak. There is a three day window of opportunity to ensure best conditions."

He added: "Its not open for the general public to enter but spectators are welcome. There is no rescue cover, it's up to individuals to look after themselves. However waterproof mobile phones will be used to contact each other if necessary.

"Twenty miles by sea is a long way to go by amateurs. The true distance by sail even could up to 35-40 miles depending on the tides and winds on the day.

"Dehydration, fatigue, sun stroke are major factors to consider,as well as knowing your own limits."

Marcus is hoping for windy and sunny conditions which will push them along the coast, and thinks the trip will take between six to eight hours via kayak, and between four to ten hours on windsurfer.

He said; "It's a cause which needs no introductions, please give generously via www.justgiving.com/bexhilltocamberchallenge . You can donate online by paypal or card. Alternatively we will have collections boxes on the day or in cafes along West Parade by this weekend."
