HISTORY STUDY GROUP: This evening (Friday) Eastbourne local history enthusiast and guide Alan Wenham will give an illustrated talk entitled Eastbourne's East End at 7.45pm in the village hall. London was not the only town with an East End very different from the fashionable residential areas to its west. Behind the original Eastbourne Sea Houses was an artisans' quarter inhabited by fishermen, blacksmiths, building labourers and laundry workers. While much of Victorian and Edwardian Eastbourne was a prosperous and well-laid-out area for the fashionable, life in the working class east side was very different in character, attracting the attention of local philanthropists and the Salvation Army.

FOOTBALL AND SOCIAL CLUB: Tomorrow, Saturday, the first team are in FA Vase action when they take on Sporting Club Thames at home at The Caburn Ground. Kick-off time is 3pm as usual. The club also welcomes our new sponsors, Long Man Brewery, to the game on Saturday, who will be in the clubhouse with some of their excellent ales for us to sample. Meanwhile, the seconds travel to Selsey for a league fixture with a 3pm kick-off and the thirds are away to Fairwarp with a 2pm kick-off time. On Sunday the Under 18s are away to AFC Uckfield with an 11am kick-off and on Thursday evening they are at home to Seaford with a 7.45pm kick-off at the Caburn. On Tuesday evening the first team are away to Lingfield in a league fixture (assuming no FA Vase replay is required) with a 7.45pm kick-off time.

ST MARY’S: On Sunday we gather for a traditional Eucharist service at 10am and welcome the family and friends of Max whose baptism takes place as part of the service. Other services 8am Holy Communion and 6.30pm Evensong. On Thursday, there’s an opportunity to find out more about the various groups and activities helping explore the Bible and faith in more detail: Two open sessions will take place in the Church Room with refreshments – 10.15am and 7.15pm. The groups will be introduced by a member and include: Bible Study, Book Group, Lectio Divina, Prayers for All and the Circle of Quiet. There will be an outline of the aims of each group, how it is organised and where and when each takes place. New members are most welcome, you don’t have to be a regular worshipper, just keen to find out more! St Mary’s is joining with the churches of Barcombe and Newick to support a winter aid appeal for Syria and Iraq. More details of the specific items needed for collection on 1 October from www.samarasaidappeal.org. The bells are back. After a few weeks of silence, various moving parts of each of the bells were re-installed last week. It may not sound different to you but to the ringers, the sound in the ringing room is very different as a significant of sound proofing was removed during the work. As with all these projects, the work has left the ringers with a long list of jobs (big and small) to fix.

BAPTIST CHURCH: Regular Services in the village hall: Sundays at 10.30am and 6pm. Communion usually celebrated on second Sunday (morning) and fourth Sunday (evening) each month. Sunday and Youth Clubs available. Come along to our Messy Church this Sunday at 2.30pm until 4pm in Ringmer Village Hall for a fun time for all the family with crafts, games, singing and tea. All welcome to our afternoon service at 2.15pm in Holm Lodge Residential Home on Wednesday. The Ringmer Food Bank, run by Ringmer Baptist Church, is open every Monday from 1.30pm to 2.30pm. Located in the village hall (Rogers Room) it is available to individuals and families referred to us by local welfare organisations. COFFEE MORNING: Joan is having a posh coffee morning on Friday September 30 in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. As well as delicious coffee and cakes there will be a few stalls including bring and buy. It will take place from 10am to noon in the Church Room.
