Roads’ condition

NOW that approval has moved forward for the North Littlehampton development, I wish to make a comment about the road infrastructure and its parlous condition.

When I attended the public forum for the North Littlehampton plan earlier this year at All Saints’ Church, the person responsible for the road plans and models stated clearly to me that the new roads would be “marginally better”.

When I went away and reflected upon this, I became more and more concerned over this statement. Only last week, almost the whole of the western side of Littlehampton ground to a halt when a lorry shed some fuel on the A259. Road accidents, spills and closures are not that uncommon, especially as most of our local roads are only single carriageways.

I wish to flag up that “marginally better” is not really good enough as far as I’m concerned. At least in the planning and modelling stage I would want to see a statement like: “A much better road network” (in respect of the new developments).

It really will not do and local people will be put to major inconvenience in my view if this planned new development goes ahead as it inevitably will. Local people must realise that they will experience major delays on an already overloaded road system and inadequate network.
