FOOTBALL: There was no 1st team match last week but the 2nd team hosted FC Westridge in the first round of the Hastings FA Lower Divisions Cup and in a first half that saw both keepers making excellent saves to deny either team of a half time lead. The Bridge were playing the better football in the second period and eventually the pressure told on 53 minutes when good work from Josh Goodsell found Adam Hardy in the box to slot home and just two minutes later young Ben Thorpe crossed for Matt Winchester to strike. A minute later full back Colin Chatfield found himself in the box to score from six yards and this woke Westridge up and they started to pressure the Bridge defence but it stood firm with man of the match Matt Hardy marshalling the defence and on the stroke of full time Thorpe struck to set up a second round tie at Conquest United. Tomorrow the 1st team are at home to local rivals Mountfield United in the 2nd round of the Birchwood Group Challenge Cup while the 2nd team are away to Sandhurst in the 2nd round of the Eastbourne Coach Finishers Challenge Cup with both matches kick off 2.30pm.
