FOOTBALL: The Bridge 1st team travelled to Westfield II in the 2nd Round of the Hastings F.A. Intermediate Cup. The Westies opened the scoring midday through the first period but The Bridge responded with a goal from Ashley Platts before the break. The second half saw both teams push for the winner and it was a bad mistake which led to The Westies hitting the winner to progress into the semi-final. The 2nd team welcomed back manager Keith Stone and the team responded with two goals in the first 8 minutes against Sedlescombe Rangers III in Division 6 of the Macron East Sussex Football League. Man of the Match Matt Winchester opened the scoring on 5 minutes and then an excellent through pass by Ian Austin found young Ben Thorpe to score. The Bridge were in complete control and when the Rangers centre back was sent off by referee Dave Pilling for bringing down Howard Atkinson 25 yards from goal the resulting free kick was taken by Winchester whose shot was unstoppable into the top corner. The second half saw Rangers come more into the game and it was only the fingertips of Bridge keeper Nick Townsend that denied them a goal while at the other end it was their keeper who denied Austin a goal. Back came Rangers and again Townsend tipped another shot round the post while Winchester saw his header hit the bar and Atkinson missed from five yards as The Bridge held on for all three points. Tomorrow the 1st team are without a game while the 2nd team are at home to Icklesham Casuals II K.O. 2p.m. We are holding a ‘Quiz Night’ at Robertsbridge Club on Saturday 21st February 2015 @ 7.30p.m. Teams of upto 6 players @ £2 per player.
