Rocket-powered classroom is the winning idea at Think Big event

Billingshurst and District Lions Club have been working very closely with the ten local Primary Schools for a number of years.

This year it was agreed with the head teachers to provide and help run a programme called ‘Think Big in 2016’, which has been specifically designed and organised by educational specialists 7 Billion Ideas.

Over a 10 day period 2,100 children were encouraged to be creative, coming up with and developing their own world changing ideas.

Helen Williamson, head teacher of Billingshurst Primary School, said “A fabulous day that inspired and motivated the children across Key Stage 1 and 2.

“They learnt to use their imaginations, think big, consider the impact of their ideas and work together in a team to plan and present their ‘Big idea’.”

The comment of a parent whose son goes to William Penn Primary School in Coolham was “The children had a really fantastic day, there was a buzz for days about it. My son said it was one of the best days he has had at school. Thanks for showing the children that their ideas and opinion really matter and that they have the power to change the world!”

Last Wednesday the Weald School hosted a finals day for the winning teams from each of the ten Primary Schools.

The children’s school had continued to develop their ideas and presented them to a number of judges as well as students from the Weald.

The day was a great success with Loxwood School’s idea and design of a rocket classroom ‘Educlasset’, which could get education to countries where children don’t have a local school, being chosen as the winner.

However, all the children proved to be winners by using their imaginations to create world changing ideas.

Some of the other ideas presented by the finalists were:

n Farms on the roof of tower blocks in cities.

n Hats that act as a satellite aerial with a phone, so you can always be in contact and never get lost.

n A car that runs on urine and the seat is a toilet.

n EcoLife: a gym where the energy expended by the people using the equipment generates electricity and can be stored in a battery.

n An automatic flood barrier fitted to new build houses, which rises from the ground to surround and protect the house when flooding occurs.
