Rodmell and Southease

LITTLE BOOKS: I was somewhat horrified to get a letter from the Lewes Town and Country B&B Group of which I have been a member since it started, to find that they are no longer printing their wonderful little books advertising local B&B's. I get about five people a week telling me that they found me in this little book and they also tell me how impressed they are with it. A friend of mine, who does B&B in Denton and who appeared on TV recently, gets a lot of business from this form of advertising as she leaves the books in the port etc., so that people coming off the boats know where they can get a night's B&B at a reasonable price. Let's face it, they don't bring their computers with them, so can't look on-line and as I've said many times, so many of the older generation do not or will not use computers and prefer to have contact with people and have a book on hand. I aim to keep some books in-hand, be they out of date. I will tell people that they are no longer printed but at least they can find accommodation in them and negotiate the prices, which will of course go up over the years. It's understandable that the group finds it expensive to have these printed and also to get people to drop them off in appropriate places. In this area I leave them at our pub, Monks House, at the village hall and in a container outside my house. I find they go quite quickly and are especially valuable for walkers on the South Downs Way. As I am busy all the time, without having a website, I can't say that I'm terribly worried but it does seem a shame that these little books are going to disappear. I did have one person ask me if I could write a little book to take its place, if only I could find the time.

FLY TIPPING: Fly tipping has been taking place in this beautiful village recently. A disgusting habit of disgusting people. Also someone childishly tipped a wheel-barrow of apples, that I leave on my driveway for people to help themselves for free, into the road recently. Words fail me.

LARGE BARN: The very large barn at Piddinghoe seemed to have been built so quickly and is already packed with bales. The whole area seemed to rise like a Phoenix from the ashes and what was a field one moment, was next a large empty space, then a huge building. Things happen fast in this modern age.

HAY STACKS: Sadly, I don’t expect many can now remember the lovely hay stacks that used to stand in the fields at this time of the year. The experts that built them used to put their mark on them such as a pheasant or a hare made out of hay or corn and various areas of the country used to have their own style. Ian Everest shows some of them in his film shows and talks. At one time when I was an illustrator, I used to sell quite a few of my framed illustrations of Farm Life and Hay Stacks or Ricks as some called them were always a popular seller. Children now would not know what we are talking about.

CHILLI FAYRE: Southease always used to hold its Chilli Fayre about now, but this year Lewes has the Lewes Chilli Fayre in The Paddock tomorrow, Saturday, noon to 6pm. The famous Carolina Reaper, a notoriously hot chilli, will be there in one form or another. I wonder who will be brave enough to try it. Not me I might add, as I’ve experienced trying a hot chilli in a restaurant and nearly chocked to death on it, with tears streaming from my eyes, not a great experience.

COFFEE MORNING: On Tuesday there will be a coffee morning in the pub in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. All welcome from 11am.

JUMBLE SALE: Saturday October 1 there will be a jumble sale in Rodmell Village Hall, in aid of the hall.

DARK EVENINGS: I loathe the dark evenings as I can’t drive at night because I suffer from an eye condition. With no night transport that means I can’t get to the cinema or theatre unless a kind friend takes me. There are so many people I know who do not drive at night and they are not all oldies. People of all ages suffer eye conditions and I always say get your eyes checked regularly as sight is so important. I really believe that everyone who drives should have an eye test when they renew their licence. I have to have a DVLA test every three years. I dread it, but I do it.
