Rosie Holt back on the road with her infamous MP!

The Illegal Aliens Have Landed!

Rosie Holt made plenty of headlines with her MP alter ego during the pandemic – but she returns with her now in very different times.

Touring her new show The Illegal Aliens Have Landed!, Rosie is on the road with dates including the Brighton Dome Comedy Festival (October 25, Corn Exchange, Brighton Dome) and also The Arc, Winchester (November 27) and The Point , Eastleigh (February 12).

Rosie’s MP – who goes under Rosie's own name almost by accident – will be joined by a host of new characters.

As debates continue around immigration policy and political image-making, an even greater challenge emerges when UFOs arrive. Will the government response remain measured as it continues to insist it is “waiting for the facts” even as the extraterrestrials begin abducting and eating the British public?

Rosie is delighted to be bringing the show to Brighton: “Brighton is great. I have performed there a few times. I did my tour there last year and it is one of my favourite places to perform. I think the crowd in Brighton is pretty comedy savvy.”

Rosie’s MP emerged during the pandemic: “I had already started posting videos and I got a bit of a following with that but the first video I did as an MP was an interview with Dominic Raab. He was being interviewed about that picture that showed them all in the No 10 garden having a lovely time. He was being interviewed on Good Morning Britain or something like that and he was trying to defend it rather badly. He was saying something like ‘Sometimes you do work with wine and cheese!’ I took that footage of him and instead put my Tory MP in, answering questions equally badly.

“But it took off with the second video which was after Boris Johnson had been interviewed about the Sue Gray report, and I had my MP being interviewed saying that she wasn't able to say whether she had been at one of the parties until Sue Gray told her whether she been to one of the parties. I posted that and a lot of people thought it was real. I had two MPs calling for my resignation!”

By which time Rosie's MP had taken on Rosie's name – though that was never the intention. By then, however, it was too late to give her her own name: “I just had lots of people conflating me and the MP character and I think it would have been too confusing to give her a name then. It would have easier if I had given her a name earlier but I didn't!”

Now she is in a different era: “Just before the general election, my MP character crossed the floor to Labour. She is Labour now and is here with a number of other different characters. We've got her and we've got another character who is a Reform councillor and I've got another person who does Tiktok news. It's a variety of different characters across the spectrum.

“But at the moment my MP is Labour though really she's more the voice of the government whoever the government is. She doesn't really believe in what she is saying. She is just the absolute loyalist until she crosses the floor and joins another party!”

The point is that when things are tough, ironically that's good for political comedy: “Obviously I don't want things to get worse than they are but when things are bad then I'm prepared very nobly to use it for comedy!

“This latest show is quite a high-concept show. There has been an actual alien invasion and it's how these characters react to that. I wrote the show when Labour was being a bit dithery under Keir Starmer and so it's all about Labour saying they want to wait until they have got the facts all the while the aliens are landing. Meanwhile Reform are determined to send the aliens back, and for the right wing it's all about how do we protect our women from the aliens – all under a different agenda.”
