Rother transparency row: More questions than answers

Rother refuses to answer questions posed by its own councillors, who often find out more from the local press than the local authority.

That is the scathing claim made by Bexhill Councillor Stuart Earl.

Speaking about the letter, Cllr Earl, the Association of Independents Group Leader, said: “I was horrified when it came to my attention.

“Even after the last letter we received, nothing had been done to improve the situation. The transparency that we should expect as councillors, and the public that are paying the bills for RDC, does not exist.

“When questions have been asked, we have been met with silence and the statement that under the terms of confidentiality they could not tell us information, which is disgusting.

“Rother District Council is a public body and should be answerable to the public.”

He added: “We find out more through the Observer then we do through the council. On many occasions, not just this.”
