The announcement continues the tradition of Royal support for the South of England Agricultural Society, which has enjoyed several visits from The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh and Prince of Wales. In 2004, the Princess Royal followed in her father's footsteps by taking on the Presidency of the Society.

The Duke of Kent last came to the show in 1992, and Society officials were this week delighted to confirm his return. His visit also continues this year's close connection with the county of Kent.

Chairman David Allam explained that the Society covered six counties '“ East and West Sussex, Hampshire, Berkshire, Surrey and Kent '“ and each one was highlighted in rotation. He said: 'Every year the Society emphasises its connection with a particular county in our region. This year both the President and Deputy President are from Kent, so this visit is particularly appropriate,'

Society Director Deborah Barber said: 'We are honoured to welcome the Duke of Kent to the showground once again and look forward to showing him the best of British livestock and the countryside exhibited at our Show.'
