Rustington performance will help rescue bears behind bars

AN AFTERNOON of music in Rustington will help rescue bears in Romania from a life of captivity.

Tomorrow (Sunday, May 12) will see a special garden fund-raising event organised by Fiona Franks and her friend Ruby at number 5 Knightscroft Avenue.

The event, which kicks off at 2pm and lasts until 5.30pm, will see musical performances from the St Margaret’s Angmering Hand Bell Ringers as well as Christine Morrison, who will be playing on the keyboard.

All the cash raised during the afternoon will go towards the World Society for the Protection of Animals’ (WSPA) “Big Bear Rescue”, which Fiona is supporting.

She has pledged to try and raise at least £2,150 for the charity’s Big Bear Rescue trek, which will see volunteers taking part in a week-long expedition through the Carpathian Moutains, in Romania.

All the money raised will go towards funding the charity’s efforts to rescuing the last nine or so illegally-kept captive bears, who have spent a life as a tourist attraction with limited space to roam.

It’s hoped that the bears, once rescued, will be released in a secure sanctuary.
