Rye and Battle schools closed by strikes

Several schools and colleges in Rye and Battle are closed due to strike action by members of the NUT today (July 5).

The National Union of Teachers is holding a national strike over government plans to ‘privatise all schools through forced academisation’.

Phil Clarke, NUT national executive member and a teacher in East Sussex, said: “Funding cuts to education are reaching a critical point with larger class sizes and fewer resources for pupils.

“Rather than wasting hundreds of millions of pounds on force privatising all schools through the academy programme the government should be protecting all teachers’ terms and conditions and spending the money on children’s education.”

According to the East Sussex County Council website the following schools are closed today:

Claverham Community College, Battle

Icklesham Church of England Primary School

Robertsbridge Community College

Rye College

In a letter sent out to parents Rye College executive principal Ann Cockerham said: “We apologise for the inconvenience caused by this closure.

“The industrial action affects our working day as we will not have enough staff available to teach lessons or to supervise students adequately.

“We want to reassure parents that we are committed to ensuring that students’ learning will not be adversely affected.

“In light of this, please encourage your child to look at the BBC Bitesize and Mymaths websites.”

According to the council website, the following schools will be partly closed.

Burwash Church of England Primary School (Pluto, Mars and Jupiter classes closed)
