Rye celebratesmaritime links

Rye Maritime Festival marks its 11th year on August 2 and a top line-up of entertainment is promised at the free event.

Attractions will include live music supplied by 1066 Rockitmen and additional local bands. The Creole Jazz band will also be playing as well as the Rye Ukulele band.

Organiser Charles Bronsdon said: “There will be historical divers, Tomer Owls on display, from the Owl Sanctuary as well as a demonstration of FlyBoarding and a host of other features.

“All of this plus a beer tent, a barbecue by Rye Butchers and locally caught fish, both hot and cold, for you to enjoy, as well as many other delicacies and other local produce.

There will also be stands from the RNLI, Maritime and Coast Guard Agency, Rye Sea Cadets and many other attractions.

The festival takes place on Strand Quay and the Strand opposite,

Rye Heritage Centre will be offering free viewings of the Town Model and Light Show throughout the day.

The Maritime Festival is organised by the Rye Harbour Boat Owners Association, The Rye Harbour Sailing Club and is supported by 1066 Country Marketing, Association. Rastrum Ltd, Atlas Business Park, Rye Town Council and other local businesses.

The Boat Owner’s Association was originally set up as a protest group to oppose a 1961 Bill which aimed to carry out land drainage.

It’s aim was to ‘Protect and further the interests of boating of all kinds in the port and harbour of Rye’.

It holds activities throughout the year.
