Rye comes close to the brink

Areas of Rye came to within inches of flooding last week as a sea-surge caused waters to engulf Strand Quay.

The area which was to have been the site of a Christmas Market on Saturday was completely under-water as the sea rose perilously close to the top of the flood defence wall.

The wall was the only barrier between the busy A259 and homes and flats at the Strand.

Colonel Anthony Kimber, of Rye emergency group REACT, said that 1,000 homes in the area remained at risk of flooding from future events.
