Rye is in the frame again

A YEAR after Rye played host to top Hollywood stars including George Clooney the town is in the spotlight again featuring as the backdrop for a new high quality BBC drama series.

Rye is becoming a magnet for film crews and shooting starts this month for the BBC’s adaptation of E F Benson’s Mapp and Lucia, starring Miranda Richardson.

It is based on stories written by former Rye Mayor Benson who lampooned the snobberies of English small-town life with the town of ‘Tilling’ standing in for Rye.

Filming is planned to take place between Monday May 19 and Friday July 18 at various properties and locations in and around Rye including Lamb House, St Marys Church and several other properties on Mermaid Street and Church Square.

It is anticipated the programmes will be aired over the Christmas period 2014. The series also stars Anna Chancellor and Steve Pemberton.

Rother Council executive director Malcolm Johnston welcomed the filming as a real boost for the area.

He said: “As the inspiration for the original Mapp and Lucia novels it is wholly fitting that this television adaptation should be filmed in Rye.

“As one of the best preserved medieval towns in England, Rye will provide a stunning back-drop, and hopefully be seen in living rooms across the country it will encourage more people to come and enjoy this part of the world.”
