Rye Observer Comment

Rye was drawing up plans to repel an insidious invader this week.

No it’s not the marauding French this time but the greater threat of flood water.

There has been more than one close call in recent years with residents holding their breath that encroaching water did nor rise higher.

For years people in areas such as Rye’s Tilling Green estate and Old Brickyard have been glancing nervously out of their windows every time there is a heavy downpour.

Some hope and believe it will never happen but we can all remember the dreadful scenes at Robertsbridge when homes flooded in 2000.

Now at last experts are putting their heads together and measures are being taken to address the threat.

They may not be able to prevent Rye from flooding in a worse case scenario but at least we will be prepared and there will be valuable contingency plans in place to limit the damage and give residents ample warning.

Well done to Rye United whose inspirational cup run came to an end at Kings Lynn on Saturday.

They lost but showed the spirit and determination that has impressed so much during this run, taking the lead and battling bravely against a bigger side, despite being down to nine men.

The Quarter Boys may have tasted defeat but they can hold their heads high.

You did the town proud - lets hope we see some bigger gates for league games.
