Rye says farewellto ‘lady in red’Doreen Clements

MUCH loved charity volunteer and popular local figure Doreen Clements has died aged 85.

Doreen was proud of her Sussex heritage and living in Rye and would often say she was ‘Sussex born and bred.’

She was a familiar figure in the town and became known to many people in Rye as ‘the lady in the red coat’.

Doreen was often seen walking her dog on Gibbets Marsh and always made time to stop and talk to others.

She made many friends wherever she went.

A true animal lover, Doreen worked as a dog trainer for many years and before that in a local florists.

After retirement she continued to work as a dedicated volunteer at St Michael’s Hospice shop in Rye.

Doreen would often spend her evenings utilising her baking talents to make her speciality apple pies and chocolate cakes for the greatly appreciative staff and delivery men at the charity shop.

Doreen’s granddaughter Beccy Knight said: “She loved living in Rye and was a popular and much loved figure in the local community.

“She will be greatly missed both by her family and by her many friends in the local community.”
