Rye workers help teen cancer charity

The charity held a Blue Day where supporters were urged to either organise their own blue themed activities, such as wearing blue, eating blueberry pancakes for breakfast or making blue cocktails.

The Mermaid had all their staff wear jeans, played music which had blue in the title or the band and also had blue flowers in their arrangements. They raised £340.

Staff at The Rye Retreat also dressed in blue, listened to Blues music and sold blue cupcakes along with Raffle tickets to raise £580.

Both businesses would like to thank everyone who supported them.

The Teenage Cancer Trust is a charity that helps young people across the UK fight cancer.

All proceeds raised from the event will go towards the building and equipping of a new Teenage Cancer Trust unit at The Royal Marsden Hospital, due to open later this year.

The 13 bed unit with ensuite facilities will cost over £3 million to build and means for the first time, young cancer patients living in Sussex and Kent will be treated with others their own age, in an environment suited to their needs. This unit will complement the existing 17 the charity has already built in NHS hospitals across the UK.

The state-of-the-art units are bright and vibrant and will often include pool tables, jukeboxes, computers and webcams, helping patients keep in touch with others and cope with gruelling treatment and often long stays in hospital.
