Safety first in the run-up to Sussex firefighter strikes

The Government wants firefighters to work up to the age of 60 but the union says this is too old to be fighting fires.

Members of the union are due to walk out from 6.30pm until 11pm – a time when people may be celebrating bonfire night.

A spokeswoman from West Sussex Fire and Rescue (WSFR) said it would continue to provide an emergency response during the industrial action, but will have fewer resources available.

This week, the service is urging people to take extra care by attending an organised bonfire and firework display rather than holding an event at home.

Jackie Boyle, community fire safety officer for WSFR said: “The firework season is traditionally a busy time of year for the fire service, so we’re calling for people to help prevent emergencies by attending, wherever possible, a properly organised community bonfire and firework event. The fireworks set off will be more spectacular than those people use in their garden and they are much safer.”
