Say hello to the Gaffer

THIS fine upstanding Piltdown local was known as The Gaffer.

No one knew his real name as he didn't care for people to get too nosey!

A lot of the more elderly locals wore a battered round hat like the one Gaffer is wearing.

They also wore skin leggings below their smocks and thick boots.

The smock had a great bearing on village life because a girl was only considered suitable as a wife if she could make her husband-to-be a 'round frock' and 'beef-staak puddun'.
